The Order of Cultural Merit (OMC) is an honorary order given to Brazilian and foreign personalities as a way of recognizing their contributions to Brazilian culture. The insignia are usually awarded on November 5th of each year, when National Culture Day is celebrated. In 2008, Professor João Candido Portinari received the award for his work leading the Portinari Project.
