In June 1999, the Portinari Project, under the auspices of the EPTV TV Network of Ribeirćo Preto (a "Rede
Globo"subsidiary with a 20 million audience), carried out an expedition to the Pantanal region, setting up an
exhibition of digital replicas of Portinari's paintings on board of a Mato Grosso do Sul Forest Guard boat. We
traveled 1,200 kilometers up the Paraguai River, from Porto Murtinho to Corumbį, stopping everywhere a hamlet
could be found, to invite the riverine population to experience with us their first contact with the work of a painter,
and, from taking in his paintings, with their own feeling of nationhood. The exhibition itself was the backbone for a
larger interactive experience, specially conceived by educators for this kind of audience.
