Click to enlarge"...It is the arrival of the ships bringing the Portuguese and Spanish conquistadors. In this painting, the mariners are highlighted, not the admirals or the Fathers. The rigging and impressive whirlpools contrast with the mighty human figures, marking the movement of the scene. The air of conquest seems to beam on the navigators' faces ..." (*)


Click to enlarge"...It is the theme of the forest conquest and the domination of the land. Here, Portinari used as symbols the "bandeirantes", who are shown taking a rest from their journey through the forest. The effect produced by the painting is that of a rich and warm-colored Gobelin, in which the planes are subtly combined. Flowers and animals were woven without obeying a given pattern. The same insistence on essential objects and the same meticulous finish of the hands and arms of the "bandeirantes". ..." (*)

Click to enlarge"...It represents a sixteenth-century village, with Jesuits preaching to the Indians. The figures are grouped, as if to show the trust and affection of the latter for the Fathers of the Company. In the central group, monumental women frame the Jesuit, who is seated. A child plays at the feet of the teaching priest. Others are brought by the hand to listen to his discourse. ..." (*)

Click to enlarge"...It is the history of mining. The symbol of the worker's hand is shown in an agitated pattern: gesticulating, grabbing, squeezing. The style is impressionist. But the miners' features are intentionally indeterminate. Their noses are briefly-lined triangles and the cut fingers seem like light staccato notes. The impressionist style shows generally in the color and in the sudden strokes of brilliant colors in the hull of the boat, in the hair of the Blacks, the glitter of the gold and the small fishes. ..."
